Vita Duplex

24 March – 5 August 2018

Sean Scully was born in Dublin in 1945 and grew up in London. One of the leading contemporary painters internationally, he revisits abstract art through his unconventional approach to colours, shapes, space and light, creating works that mirror his philosophical opinions on art, society, ethics, metaphysics and human nature. With some 130 paintings, drawings, watercolours, pastels, lithographs and photographs, the exhibition offers a comprehensive panorama of Scully’s output and inner universe.

The title of the exhibition, Vita Duplex, underscores the intrinsic duality of his work, its continuous vacillation between reason and emotion, past and present, light and darkness, order and chaos — an inspiring creative tension. Born in Europe, Sean Scully moved to the United States in the 1970s and became an American citizen in 1983, so that his work spans the contributions to fine arts originating on both sides of the Atlantic: albeit rooted in the European tradition and history, it also reflects Scully’s keen interest in Abstract Expressionism, Action Painting and Minimalism.

The works exhibited at Kunsthalle Karlsruhe were created between the 1960s and today.
