No surviving historical records shed light on his early years, or his training as an artist, which gives rise to some speculation based on his artworks from this period.<\/li>\n<li>1503\u20131508 \u2013 Baldung worked in D\u00fcrer\u2019s workshop in Nuremberg, either as a full member or as an apprentice who worked on commissions.<\/li>\n<li>April 1509 \u2013 He became a citizen of the free imperial city of Strasbourg.<\/li>\n<li>1512 \u2013 Hans Baldung and his wife Margaretha Herlin moved to Freiburg in Breisgau, where he set up a workshop. Meanwhile, he was already well known as a talented artist and his reputation probably earned him the commission to create the main altar for the Freiburg cathedral.<\/li>\n<li>1518 \u2013 The couple returned to Strasbourg.<\/li>\n<li>Baldung pursued a successful artistic career in the city until his death in 1545.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n\n            <div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-5 col-sm-offset-1\">\n                <div class=\"box\">\n                    <div class=\"copy editor\"><h2>Art-Historical Context<\/h2>\n<p>In the 15th and 16th centuries, on the cusp of the early modern period and the Middle Ages, the Reformation, the Renaissance and the spirit of Humanism profoundly influenced people\u2019s attitudes about society, religion and the fine arts.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1487 \u2013 Heinrich Kramer and Jacob Sprenger publish <em>Malleus maleficarum<\/em>, a witch-hunt manual.<\/li>\n<li>1516 \u2013 Johannes Geiler von Kaysersberg publishes a cycle of sermons on witchcraft.<\/li>\n<li>1517 \u2013 Martin Luther posts his theses on the church door in Wittenberg and heralds the beginning of the Reformation.<\/li>\n<li>1524 \u2013 The Great Peasants\u2019 Revolt commences when farmers and peasants demand more rights in a rebellious uprising.<\/li>\n<li>1528 \u2013 Death of Albrecht D\u00fcrer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n\n            \n\n            <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"block block-accordion\" >\n    <div class=\"container-fluid\">\n        <div class=\"row\">\n            <div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-10 col-sm-offset-1\">\n                <div class=\"box\">\n                    <h2  >Baldung\u2019s Artworks in Numbers<\/h2>\n\n                                            \n                            <div class=\"block-accordion-item active\" aria-expanded=\"true\">\n                                <button class=\"reset-style block-accordion-item-head\" aria-controls=\"acc_69da4f2136533\" id=\"acc_title_69da4f2136534\">\n                                    <strong aria-labelledby=\"acc_title_69da4f2136534\">1\/2<\/strong>\n                                <\/button>\n\n                                <div class=\"block-accordion-item-content editor\" id=\"acc_69da4f2136533\" role=\"region\">\n                                    <p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kunsthalle-karlsruhe.de\/kunstwerke\/Hans-Baldung\/Der-behexte-Stallknecht\/06F807909FF440468AA7571C89760B5A\/\"><em>The Bewitched Groom<\/em><\/a> is an enigmatic woodcut.
