Son objectif en concevant la Kunsthalle \u00e9tait de cr\u00e9er un lieu \u00ab o\u00f9 l\u2019\u0153il, l\u2019\u00e9motion et la raison [iraient] main dans la main \u00bb \u2014 Un lieu qui ne serait pas r\u00e9serv\u00e9 \u00e0 quelques privil\u00e9gi\u00e9s mais ouvert au public.<\/p>\n<p>En 1830, le prince L\u00e9opold de Bade ordonna, \u00ab dans l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat de l\u2019instruction publique \u00bb, la construction d\u2019une galerie de peinture pr\u00e8s des b\u00e2timents de l\u2019Acad\u00e9mie construits au si\u00e8cle pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent.<\/p>\n<h3>Influence de l\u2019Italie<\/h3>\n<p>H\u00fcbsch con\u00e7ut un ensemble compos\u00e9 de quatre ailes dont la premi\u00e8re, construite le long de l\u2019actuelle Hans-Thoma-Strasse, fut termin\u00e9e en 1846. En s\u2019inspirant de ce qu\u2019il avait d\u00e9couvert durant plusieurs longs s\u00e9jours en Italie, l\u2019architecte choisit d\u2019utiliser des mat\u00e9riaux diff\u00e9rents tant sur les fa\u00e7ades que pour les am\u00e9nagements int\u00e9rieurs. L\u2019architecte Heinz Mohl, originaire de Karlsruhe, le remporta avec un projet qui reprenait lui aussi le principe des quatre ailes formul\u00e9 par H\u00fcbsch, mais pr\u00e9voyait la construction d\u2019un b\u00e2timent de style moderne con\u00e7u pour une visite r\u00e9partie sur deux \u00e9tages. L\u2019aile Amersbach sur trois niveaux ne pouvant pas \u00eatre int\u00e9gr\u00e9e au nouvel \u00e9difice, elle fut d\u00e9molie en 1981\/82 \u00e0 l\u2019exception de sa fa\u00e7ade nord et la construction de l\u2019aile Mohl commen\u00e7a peu de temps apr\u00e8s.            <p>En 1843, alors que la \u00ab Kunsthalle du grand-duc \u00bb n\u2019\u00e9tait pas encore termin\u00e9e, le prince chargea Heinrich H\u00fcbsch d\u2019\u00e9laborer des plans pour une orangerie. Un \u00e9difice de ce type avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9t\u00e9 construit \u00e0 Karlsruhe dans la premi\u00e8re moiti\u00e9 du XVIIIe si\u00e8cle, et Friedrich Weinbrenner, aupr\u00e8s de qui H\u00fcbsch avait \u00e9tudi\u00e9 l\u2019architecture, avait commenc\u00e9 en 1806 \u00e0 concevoir des b\u00e2timents similaires devant d\u00e9limiter le parc du ch\u00e2teau au sud et \u00e0 l\u2019ouest.<\/p>\n<p>H\u00fcbsch s\u2019inspira pour cette t\u00e2che de ce qu\u2019il avait vu en 1846 lors d\u2019un voyage en Angleterre, pays alors \u00e0 la pointe du progr\u00e8s en la mati\u00e8re, et con\u00e7ut un \u00e9difice surmont\u00e9 d\u2019une coupole en verre (d\u00e9truite durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale). Con\u00e7u par Heinrich H\u00fcbsch, il abritait \u00e0 l\u2019origine le logement de fonction du directeur des Jardins princiers. C\u2019\u00e9tait alors un simple cube couvert d\u2019un toit en croupe \u00e0 faible pente s\u2019inspirant des palais du nord de l\u2019Italie. Cet immeuble est une des rares r\u00e9alisations de l\u2019architecte dont la fa\u00e7ade soit enti\u00e8rement recouverte d\u2019enduit, \u00e0 l\u2019exception du socle et des encadrements des portes et fen\u00eatres, r\u00e9alis\u00e9s en pierres de taille. On y retrouve toutefois au premier \u00e9tage les panneaux en relief aux couleurs contrast\u00e9es chers \u00e0 H\u00fcbsch. Ce b\u00e2timent est \u00e9galement l\u2019un des rares immeubles d\u2019habitation de l\u2019architecte ayant \u00e9t\u00e9 conserv\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>Lors des travaux de modernisation r\u00e9alis\u00e9s en 2009\/2010, les \u00e9quipements techniques ont \u00e9t\u00e9 enti\u00e8rement r\u00e9nov\u00e9s et mis en concordance avec la nouvelle utilisation en tant que mus\u00e9e.
