Description

This reredos, created at the turn of the Middle Ages to modern times, comes from the chapel of the Bishop of Constance, Hugo von Hohenlandenberg, who is seen kneeling on the left at the feet of St. Conrad, patron saint of the diocese. The Crucifixion on the central panel is located in a vague here and now for the contemporary viewers around 1500. For the three condemned felons at Christ’s Crucifixion, as well as Mary, Mary Magdalene, and John the Evangelist, are not standing against a backdrop of historic Jerusalem, but against the backdrop of a medieval city.
