Description
Although the three parts of the triptych appear to be a unified narrative because of the common landscape, many biblical generations lie between them. On the left wing, the Babylonian king is told about men who escaped alive from a fiery furnace. On the right, the prophet Jonah climbs out of the belly of the whale unharmed. The Old Testament stories are about overcoming death. Thus they point to the resurrection of Christ on the centre panel, which the artist depicts in a blend of Early Netherlandish and Italian Renaissance elements.
