Annette Barcelo
Hot Dogs and Silent Sisters
The main building of the Kunsthalle Karlsruhe is closed for the coming years due to renovation work.
In the meantime, exhibitions are taking place at the ZKM | Center for Art and Media, the Orangerie, and the Junge Kunsthalle.
Swiss artist Annette Barcelo is known for her powerful, sometimes surreal drawings on paper and paintings.
In her works, she combines expressive lines with detailed, imaginative worlds of figures. Her drawings are populated by a large arsenal of figures from the animal world, which accompany her throughout her life and can be understood as expressions of desires, fears and dreams. Her works move between dream and reality, between humour and profundity. Using pencil, ink or coloured pencil, Barcelo creates a dense visual vocabulary that addresses social issues as well as personal, sometimes profound narratives. With this studio exhibition, the Kunsthalle Karlsruhe is dedicating a solo presentation of current works on paper to this fascinating but hitherto insufficiently recognised contemporary artist for the first time in Germany.
