Friedrich Weinbrenner
Classically topical
The main building of the Kunsthalle Karlsruhe is closed for the coming years due to renovation work.
In the meantime, exhibitions are taking place at the ZKM | Center for Art and Media, the Orangerie, and the Junge Kunsthalle.
Friedrich Weinbrenner, the architect, still shapes the urban landscape of his hometown Karlsruhe today.
On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the death of Karlsruhe architect Friedrich Weinbrenner, the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe is dedicating a studio exhibition to him. On display are 46 selected drawings from the Department of Prints and Drawings: ranging from sketches of ancient buildings to visionary designs for fantastic architecture, and detailed plans for the Margrave’s Palace and the Court Theatre. These works reveal Weinbrenner’s classical way of thinking, his sources of inspiration in Italy, and his role as Baden’s chief building director.
Digital reconstructions complement the drawings and bring lost buildings back to life. In the studio exhibition, visitors can discover the creative visions of Friedrich Weinbrenner, his defining influence on Karlsruhe’s urban landscape, and the spirit of architectural renewal around 1800.
