The two fragments, which are from the fixed wings of the Heller Altar from the Dominican Church in Frankfurt, encourage us to take a closer look: What is it actually about? A statue? A painting? Usually such works, painted only in shades of grey, play games with our perception. Grünewald expanded the rules of the game: thanks to the subtlety of his painting style, his figures do not merely appear as sculptures set in niches; right to the tips of their hair they seem to breath with life.
