“Turkish Wars”
The “Turkish Wars” (14th-18th century) were a series of military conflicts between the Ottoman Empire and various European states, including Habsburg, Poland-Lithuania and Venice. In order to defeat common enemies, the Ottoman Empire established military alliances with France on multiple occasions. Significant events included the sieges of Vienna (1529, 1683) and the Battle of Lepanto (1571), which had a major impact on the further course of the balance of power. The conflicts had a significantly impacted the populations of the contested regions, such as the Balkans, which were often afflicted by occupation, resettlement, and compulsory military service. The “Turkish Wars” had far-reaching consequences for the cultural, political and social structures of the Ottoman Empire and Europe.
