re*visions
What is re*visions about?
The Kunsthalle Karlsruhe acknowledges that certain works of art history may be particularly distressing to some individuals. Based on the lived experiences of viewers, art pieces have different meanings for viewers. We aim to raise awareness of this aspect within our presentation of art works.
To understand discrimination as a facet of social power relations, meaningfully address and overcome it, those who are not affected by it must also come to terms with their social position. This includes white European mainstream societies and their cultural institutions.
Our institution is moving towards engaging and raising awareness about discrimination, and we would like to broaden the perspectives on the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe’s collection. To this end, we have commissioned a series of texts and digital contributions from authors who have been affected by discrimination. These contributions aim to diversify the perspectives presented at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe and create space for expert knowledge previously excluded. We plan to add further statements in the future. This initiative builds on prior museum work in a critical manner and advocates for the format re*vision.
