Archistories
Architecture in Art
Architectures tell of history and stories – «Archistories». They are a medium of expression and of shaping the world. The exhibition presents, with more than 100 works by around 70 artists, how human construction becomes a theme in art – from the 17th century to the present.
In artworks, architectures function as metaphors or documents of existential situations and anthropological self-descriptions. They are archives of social, economic, ecological, and political processes. They reveal technical capabilities and shifting value systems. They define humans in relation to their environment. Artworks whose subject is architecture thus open up the possibility of experiencing and discussing the myriad facets of this world-shaping field of human creativity in an aesthetically mediated way.
This is the aim of the exhibition, in which works from the Kunsthalle’s collection enter into dialogue with pieces by invited artists. They also ask about the designs and possibilities for a successful life on a planet that, not least because of our architectural activity, is becoming increasingly inhospitable.
